Looking Back
by
Mark M. DeRobertis
When I’m flat on my back
At the end of my life
All I want by my side
Is my sons and my wife
Yes I lived a long time
Had enough of my share
I won’t ask who’s waiting
Cuz I really don’t care
Early or late we have an appointment
No one I know is able to hide
As you are wrapped and covered in ointment
Charon is there to offer a ride
Looking back is all now
All that’s left in my mind
Did I clothe the naked
Was I guiding the blind
Was I looking for you
Were you looking for me
Was it meant just like this
Is this all there would be
Would you believe a world full of madness
Never became a part of my soul
Maybe I had my share of the sadness
Life has a way of taking its toll
What provides the will to live
Did I have enough
Was there more the world could give
Did it have to be so rough
Is your soul transparent when you let go
Will the gods in heaven and in hell know
Do I want to be like them
Who on earth could say
Will we all be born again
Or is there another way
Is a spirit truly what we all thought
Is the path to heaven what we all sought
Ev’ry single day
Yearly the time would spin on a dime, just faster
Ticking away became yesterday’s new master
Faster...faster all the time...faster
Hours would pass like sands in a glass still flowing
Flyin’ red hot like winds that would not stop blowing
Faster...faster all the time...faster
Nobody knew, except maybe you who’s winning
I didn’t care the world wouldn’t dare stop spinning
Faster...faster all the time...faster
Who was the one on top...when all the dust was clear
Does it still really count...now that the end is near
What good’s the life I lived...when I’m placed underground
There’s more important things...in life that I have found
An honest man...a helping hand
A happy child...a flower wild
A field of green...a world is clean
You’ll understand
Now I know about life
And I’ll learn about death
But what I’ll be thinking
When I take my last breath
Were you part of my soul
Are you there in my heart
Are you at the ending
Were you there from the start
Living again, for me isn’t needed
I don’t regret the life that I had
Even if not one life is repeated
I am content that mine wasn’t bad
Looking back is all anyone can do
