Drum Beat
by
Mark M. DeRobertis
Drum beat reaching my ears
Calms down ev’rybody’s fears
Look up what do you see
Throngs of marching enemy
Men stare looking intense
Lined up like a human fence
Shields long, rounded and large
Held up holding off the charge
Mayhem rules a landscape of blood and death
Soldiers fall while cursing with their last breath
No time even to think
Sights that cause your heart to sink
Time is lost to it all
Who’s left standing who will fall
Just what do I see when I look around
Hundreds of the dead lay upon the ground
But here I am
And there you are
We will survive
At least so far
Not a wound among us...all the blood is theirs
As we make our way back...in a file of pairs
We salute the gen’ral...he returns a smile
Burn the dead among us...smell so cold and vile
Twenty years this is the story...tales of blood and death and glory
Books are written by the winners...lessons learned are for beginners
Just above the mountain...sun begins to set
Now the day is over...but we won’t forget
That our deeds are written...in eternity
Now it’s left behind us...and we’ve yet to see
Another night...another war...another fight...and then some more
Darkness falls on the land
No one really understands
Who’s the winner today
No one tries to even say
One more time unto the breach my dear friend
March along, the drum beats sounding again
Do you know who won the war we just fought
Did we learn from all the lessons we taught
Darkness falls on the land
No one really understands
Who’s the winner today
No one tries to even say
One more time unto the breach my dear friend
March along, the drum beats sounding again
Do you know who won the war we just fought
Did we learn from all the lessons we taught
